We had the pleasure of attending the latest LA is Just My Type event hosted by Type Ed’s Co-Founder, Rachel Elnar. This talk featured lettering legend, Peter Greco. Lettering is an ancient craft that is on the upswing; artists all over the world are pouring over French curves, stencils, Bristol and Micron pens, uploading outrageously beautiful masterpieces to Instagram and other social media outlets. But before all of the modern day hype and easy access to a social media based audience, there were undercover geniuses quietly creating some of the most iconic lettering masterpieces of all time. One of those geniuses is Peter Greco.
Watching Peter present was a real treat. He showed us some of his favorite projects, which included lettering he was commissioned to make for cherished movie classics such as Casablanca, Splash, Blazing Saddles, and Little Mermaid, just to name a few. He also displayed commissioned Logos from ultra-recognizable entities such as D.A.R.E, Coney Island, and The Los Angeles Times.
It is clear that Peter lives and breathes his craft as he exudes excitement and passion every time he speaks about it. You can often find Peter on the streets of LA creating beautiful Toltec street art, bringing dilapidated walls to life. He also enjoys working on a long-term personal project; a graphic novel based on a Mystic of the 1500’s named Spalato and his larger than life harrowing journey.
The level of detail and character present in Peter’s work is that of a master with undying passion for his craft, and what’s more, he produces his pieces without the use of a computer.
We had the opportunity to interview Peter before his talk, check it out below:
